A vacuum pump is a type of mechanical device that is used to remove gas molecules from a sealed volume to create a partial or complete vacuum. The vacuum created by a vacuum pump is typically measured in units of pressure, such as Torr or Pascal.
There are several types of vacuum pumps, including:
1. Positive displacement pumps: These pumps use mechanical means to expand a cavity, allowing gas to flow into the pump, and then seal the cavity, compressing the gas and expelling it out of the pump.
2. Momentum transfer pumps: These pumps use high-speed jets of fluid or steam to transfer gas molecules out of a chamber.
3. Entrapment pumps: These pumps capture gas molecules by chemically or physically trapping them on a surface, rather than physically pumping them out of the chamber.
Vacuum pumps are commonly used in a wide range of applications, including in scientific research, industrial manufacturing, and medical equipment. Some common uses for vacuum pumps include semiconductor manufacturing, vacuum packaging of food, vacuum distillation of liquids, and air conditioning and refrigeration systems.
